acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin)

COX 1/2 inhibitor - irreversible
Used to reduce inflammation, pain, fever. Also an anti-platelet
AE: bleeding, renal impairment

ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)

COX 1/2 inhibitor - reversible
Reduces inflammation, pain, fever
Can increase the risk of thrombus

keterolac (Toradol)

Strong IV NSAID
Max 5 day therapy

acetaminophen (Tylenol)

COX-2 inhibition in the CNS
Reduction of pain and fever

morphine

strong opioid analgesic that works primarily at mu-receptors
AE: respiratory depression -> respiratory arrest; N/V;
constipation; etc.
overdose: classic triad - coma, respiratory depression, pinpoint
pupils (may dilate after hypoxic)

methadone

relief of pain, Tx of opioid addiction
AE: prolongs QT interval (ECG before therapy, 30 days into, then
annually), respiratory depression
Long duration, long half-life

codeine

moderate-to-strong opioid

tramadol, tapentadol

Mu-opioid agonist/SNRI

nalaxone (Narcan)

competitive antagonist at opioid receptors
reversal of opioid overdose
IV, IM, SQ, nebulizer, nasal spray

naltrexone

Tx of opioid-induced constipation
