Sedatives
reduce the desire for physical activity
Hypnotics
induce and maintain sleep
Barbiturates
causes activation of the GABA receptor leading to hyperpolarization
of neurons - will cause sedation or sleep depending on dose
Benzodiazepines
increases inhibitory activity of GABA - @ low dose it decreases
anxiety without drowsiness, @ high dose it induces sleep
Antidepressant Drugs
block reuptake of NE and serotonin stimulating CNS
Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA's)
increases serotonin and NE but reserved for those who do not respond
to SSRI's
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI's)
inhibits monoamine oxidase
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's)
increases serotonin in synaptic cleft
Serotonin/Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRI's)
increases serotonin and norepinephrine in synaptic cleft
Opioid Agonists
relieve or decrease pain without patient losing consciousness
Opioid Antagonists
used to reverse adverse drug reactions produced by agonists
Morphine
decrease release of substance p (pain) in neurons and excitatory
neurotransmitter from nociceptors
