COM 101 Planet Speech Flashcards

Gather all you know about Pluto and put it at the forefront of your
mind. Be it what you learned in second grade elementary when reciting
the planets or the recent flyby that revealed the beautiful white
heart shaped spot. My goal is to expand your knowledge and eventually
come to a conclusion on its status.

...

Recently, we have changed Plutos planet rank, causing upset in the
scientific and common community.
To consider Pluto anything other than a dwarf planet would be incorrect.

...

After careful research and the love I have for astronomy including a
basic knowledge of outer-space due to an astronomy class, I have come
to these conclusions I hope you can relate to and take away a positive
understanding of the subject.

...

First I will discuss the definition and classifications of
planets and their importance in astrophysics I will then
talk about the general publics stance on Pluto and talk of the
effects it has on labeling. Finally, I will discuss
information on other dwarf planets.

...

To consider Pluto anything other than a dwarf planet would be incorrect
The following is why classifications are important

...

According to Gibor Basri of the Astronomy at the Univ. of California,
Berkeley, In astrophysics, the definition of objects is usually based
solely on their physical characteristics, or observational
characteristics if we dont yet understand the physical objects.

...

Physical characteristics are impertinent to things such as
calculations, density, and chemical reactions.
When dealing with calculations, to increase or decrease the mass of
an object has a direct impact on the effect that object has on other objects.

...

So knowing classifications of planets have a significant impact, what
is a planet?
First you must know the meaning of a dwarf planet

...

Before 2003, there were only inter-solar planets and KBOs (Kuiper
Belt Objects).
In 2003, a few astronomers discovered an object bigger than Pluto,
Eris. Upon agreeing this was no normal object, the name dwarf planet
was agreed upon, and eventually making Pluto a dwarf planet in 2006.

...

The IAU (International Astronomical Union) now use the Aristotelian system
This classifies based on binary qualities such as orbiting the Sun
or not orbiting the Sun; round or not round ect.

...

There are four major rock bodies in within the solar system. Planets,
dwarf planets, small solar system bodies, and satellites (more
commonly known as moons).

...

Now that I have defined what a planet is, I will talk of how it is
culturally defined and the effects that has on the scientific environment.
Understandably, the general public does not welcome change in ideals
in an easy manner.

...

There were multiple official petitions made by teacher and parental organizations.
I feel if they simply understood the dynamics and intricacies of
astrophysics, they would be soon to have a change of mind.

...

There were also textbooks, posters, models, and any other
representation to consider.
These now being void, it would call for new products. However, with
every year there are massively progressive findings in the scientific community.

...

Society is in a constant state of motion and should not be held back
from further inquiries, even from those with young minds.
Now that I have discussed Pluto, I will talk of the other dwarf planets

...

Eris, Haumea, Makemake, and Ceres are less commonly known, but still
very relevant dwarf planets. These can be seen in the diagram.
Being smaller, dwarf planets are much less likely to stand their
ground if impact with another object occurred

...

Eris, Pluto, and Haumea all possess satellites
On March 6, 2015, Dawn the spacecraft, orbited Ceres, as well as
the spacecraft New Horizons orbiting Pluto on July 14th of
the same year.

...

The first point I made was defining what we know as a
planet. Second, I talked of the publics view on Pluto.
Lastly, I discussed why Pluto should be considered a dwarf
planet for good.

...

To consider Pluto anything other than a dwarf planet would be incorrect
All of these things in consideration, scientifically, Pluto is and
does not belong in any classification other than dwarf planet.

...

This is not to rule out any future scientific discoveries that may
say otherwise. I hope you have grasped a better understanding of Pluto
and all things planets.
