add

To combine, put together two or more quantities.

addend

Any number being added.

area

The measure, in square units, of the inside of a plane figure.

array

An arrangement of objects in equal rows.

attribute

A characteristic of an object, such as color, shape, size, etc.

bar graph

A graph that uses the height or length of rectangles to compare data.

standard form (numeral form)

A common way of writing a number using digits. The value of a numeral depends on where it appears in the number. also known as standard form

centimeter

A metric unit of length equal to 0.01 of a meter.100 cm = 1 m

Changing the order of the factors does not change the product.

compare

To decide if one number is greater than, less than, or equal to another number. Look for the DIFFERENCES.

congruent

Having exactly the same size and shape.

customary measurement system

A system of measurement used in the U.S. The system includesunits for measuring length, capacity, and weight.

decompose (expanded form)

To separate into components or basic elements.

denominator

The quantity below the line in a fraction. It tells how many equal parts are in the whole.

difference

The amount that remains after one quantity is subtracted from another.

digit

Any of the symbols0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9.

divide

To separate into equal groups and find the number in each group or the number of groups.

equal groups

Groups that contain the same number of objects. TO DIVIDE: separate items into equal groups. TO MULTIPLY: combine or add all objects together

equal parts

Parts of an object or group that have been divided equally into pieces.

estimate

To find a number close to an exact amount; an estimate tells about how much or about how many.

expanded form

A way to write numbers that shows the place value of each digit.

A group of related facts that use the same numbers.Also called related facts.

factor

The whole numbers that are multiplied to get a product.

foot

A customary unit of length.1 foot = 12 inches.

fourths

The parts you get when you divide something into 4 equal parts.

fraction

A way to describe a part of a whole or a part of a group by using equal parts.

half hour

A unit of time equal to 30 minutes.

halves

The parts you get when you divide something into 2 equal parts.

hexagon

A polygon with six sides.

inch

A customary unit of length.12 inches = 1 foot.

interval

The distance between two points.

key

A part of a map, graph, or chart that explains what the symbols mean.

length

How long something is. The distance from one point to another. Length is measured in units such as inches, feet, centimeters, etc.

meter

A standard unit of length in the metric system.

metric system

A system of measurement based on tens. The basic unit of capacity is the liter. The basic unit of length is the meter. The basic unit of mass is the gram.

multiple

A product of a given whole number and any other whole number.

multiply

The operation of repeated addition of the same number.

numerator

The number written above the line in a fraction. It tells how many equal parts are described in the fraction.

parallelogram

A quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel and congruent sides.

pentagon

A polygon that has five sides.

perimeter

The distance around a figure.

pictograph

A graph that uses pictures or symbols to represent data.

place value

The value a digit has because of its place in a number.

polygon

A two-dimensional figure.

product

The answer to a multiplication problem.

quadrilateral

A four sided polygon.

quarter hour

A unit of time worth 15 minutes.

quotient

The answer to a division problem.

regroup

To rearrange the formation of a group.

subtract

An operation that gives the difference between two numbers. Subtraction can be used to compare two numbers, or to find out how much is left after some is taken away.

sum

The answer to an addition problem.

tally table

A table that uses tally marks to record data.

tens

Sets of ten ones. Examples: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, or 90

thirds

The parts you get when you divide something into 3 equal parts.

trapezoid

A quadrilateral with one pair of parallel sides and one pair of sides that are not parallel.

two-dimensional

Having length and width. Having area, but not volume.Also called a plane figure.

vertex (plural - vertices)

A point at which two or more sides of a geometric figure meet.

whole

All of an object, a group of objects, shape, or quantity.

whole numbers

Whole numbers are zero and the counting numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and so on. If a number has a negative sign, a decimal point, or a part that's a fraction, it is not a whole number.

width

One dimension of a 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional figure.

word form

A way of using words to write a number.Also called number names.
