Software license

Gives user rights to use the software under the specific conditions and restrictions stated in the license. The distribution and use of the software is restricted.

License software

This software is sold. Purchasers buy the rights to use the software. It grants the rights to use the software on one or more standalone computers, to distribute the software over a network for use on a specified number of network stations, and the site license to distribute use the software on any computer or particular site.

Public domain software

Free software. The owners of the software make it available to anyone who wants to use it, or to specific groups of users, at zero purchase cost. Software producers may place any restriction on the use of the software that they wish. Even so, most of this kind of software carries no restrictions on its use.

Open source software

The license to this kind of software makes the source code available for everyone to modify and reuse. They are usually free and allow users to modify and distribute the software.

Shareware software

Licensed software that is initially distributed freely in the manner of public domain software. Users may install the software and try it out. However, if they decide to make regular use of the software, they must pay a license fee. Users sometimes receive improved versions of the software when a license fee is paid. Where the license fee is not paid, continued use of the software is illegal.

Creative commons license

These help those who produce software communicate to users in a straightforward way the rights they keep for themselves, and the rights they give others.

Demonstration disk

A disk containing a demonstration version of software. They are often sent to intending purchasers so that they can evaluate software for themselves. The software on this may be complete but often there is some essential feature, like printing or saving, omitted. This is to encourage potential purchasers to buy a licensed copy of the software.

Disk defragmenter

When a file is saved on a hard disk, the file may be fragmented with different parts saved in different locations on the disk. Access speed to files on the hard disk will get slower as more files become fragmented into more parts. this will reassemble all the different parts of all the files.
