+drugs used to control mood swings in patients with bipolar mood disorders
+affect cellular transport mechanism and enhance serotonin or y-aminobutyric acid associated with mood


+therapeutic level: 0.6-1.2
+concurrent use of diuretics, fluoxetine and NSAIDs increases risk of lithium toxicity

oxcarbazepine(trileptal), gabapentin (neurontin), Olanzapine (Zyprexa), Risperidone (Risperdal) Valproate Sodium (Depakote)

Lithium Toxicity Nursing Interventions

1. withhold & notify HCP
2. Monitor vital signs
3. Monitor cardiac status
4. Prepare to obtain samples of electrolyte, BUN, Creatinine levels, CBC
5. Monitor for suicidal tendencies & institute suicide precautions
