Mitosis, Meiosis & Non disjunction

What is the cell cycle?

Time from birth of a new somatic cell until it undergoes cell division to form two new daughter cells -Has two stages: Interphase & Mitosis

Describe the characteristics of Interphase

-period between cell division-Max time is spent in this phase; varies from one cell type to another -cell grows

Describes the characteristics of mitosis

-cell divides here to form two daughter cells -2-4 hours and is constant

Different types of cell in "cell cycle

Labile cells: multiply throughout life; cells of skin, GIT, epithelial cells; most susceptible to chemoStable cells: in quiescent Go phase; can divide if stimulated correctly; liver cellsPermanent cells: lost the capability to divide; permanently in Go phase; Neurons, cardiac muscle cells
