Narrative Writing

tells a story

Expository Writing

Introduces or explains a subject. It gives groundwork information that is necessary for understanding later ideas, or analyzes information objectively.

Technical Writing

passes along precise information, usually about a specific topic. It usually is in a formal or semi-formal style.

Persuasive Writing

tries to get the reader to agree with the author

Topic

the general subject matter covered by the work

Main Idea

is the work's specific message. It is the reason why the text is written.
Example: To erase depression, one must engage the rational part of the brain, and ignore the emotional part

Supporting Detail

The details of the main idea.

Themes

subjects that a written work frequently touches upon.
Example: Depression: the rational solution might touch upon themes of despair, hope redemption and del-improvement.
