Digital Information Technology - EOC Review

hardware

any part of your computer that has a physical structure, such as the keyboard or mouse.

software

any set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do and how to do it, such as web browsers, games, and word processors.

input device

sends information to a computer system for processing. Examples - keyboard, mouse, or scanner.

output device

any device used to send data from a computer to another device or user - example monitor which displays data on a screen.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

also called a processor, is located inside the computer case on the motherboard. It is sometimes called the brain of the computer, and its job is to carry out commands.

network

two or more computers connected for the purpose of communicating and sharing resources

components of a network

server computer, client computers, shared devices such as printers, networking devices such as router and switch

client

the computers used by individuals, such as a PC on a desk

server

receives request from client computers for resources such as files

LAN (Local Area Network)

is a group of computers and associated devices that share a common communications line or wireless link to a server. School computer labs use a LAN.

WLAN ( Wireless Local Area Network)

is a wireless distribution method for two or more devices that use high-frequency radio waves and often include an access point to the Internet. A WLAN allows users to move around the coverage area, often a home or small office, while maintaining a network connection

WAN (Wide Area Network)

is a communications network that spans a large geographic area such as across cities, states, or countries. They can be private to connect parts of a business or they can be more public to connect smaller networks together.

cloud

is the Internet—more specifically, it's all of the things you can access remotely over the Internet. When something is in the cloud, it means it's stored on Internet servers instead of your computer's hard drive.

memory

memory refers to the computer hardware devices involved to store information for immediate use in a computer; it is synonymous with the term "primary storage".

RAM (Random Access Memory)

is your system's short-term memory. Whenever your computer performs calculations, it temporarily stores the data in the RAM until it is needed.

hard drive

your computer's long term memory. When you save a file, the data is written to the hard drive, which acts as long-term storage.

byte

In most computer systems, a byte is a unit of data that is eight binary digits long. A byte is the unit most computers use to represent a character such as a letter, number or typographic symbol. ((There are 8 bits in one byte))

bit

A bit is the smallest unit of information that can be stored or manipulated on a computer; it consists of either zero or one. We can also call a bit a binary digit.

internet

the interconnected network of computer networks that is globally available

intranet

is a private network that is contained within an organization or business.

URI (Uniform Resource Identifier)

identifies a resource on the internet

virus

is a type of malicious code or program written to alter the way a computer operates and that is designed to spread from one computer to another

worm

is a standalone malware computer program that replicates itself in order to spread to other computers. Often, it uses a computer network to spread itself, relying on security failures on the target computer to access it.

malware

is an abbreviated term meaning "malicious software." This is software that is specifically designed to gain access or damage a computer without the knowledge of the owner

sharepoint

is a secure place to store, organize, share, and access information from any device. Allows individuals in an organization to easily create andmanage their own collaborative Web sites. Gives businesses a shared space to store documents so they're not locked away on any one person's hard drive and can be easily shared.

online help

most programs have access to help via a built in help menu, a help icon, or a help search engine to locate help files

manuals

Comprehensive and step-by-step guide to a particular topic for both beginners and practitioners that also serves as a reference book. A manual details what is given and what is required, explains how to put the presented information into practice, and instructs how to solve problems as they occur. This term is commonly used interchangeably with handbook.

LAN vs WAN

LAN, which stands for local area network, and WAN, which stands for wide area network, are two types of networks that allow for inter-connectivity between computers. As the naming conventions suggest, LANs are for smaller, more localized networking — in a home, business, school, etc. — while WANs cover larger areas, such as cities, and even allow computers in different nations to connect.

Leaders help themselves and others to do the right things. They set direction, build an inspiring vision, and create something new. In contrast to viruses, which require the spreading of an infected host file, worms are standalone software and do not require a host program or human help to propagate.
