List the outcomes or results of the War of 1812:

1.American troops failed in their efforts to invade Canada. This put an end to the dream of the War Hawks to make Canada a part of the U.S. The American troops were also defeated by the English who captured Washington, D.C. The White House was burned, and President Madison barely escaped capture by British soldiers. 2. The American navy did not do as badly as the army. Although most of the fleet was forced off the high seas, a few warships, like the U.S.S. Constitution, or "Old Ironsides," won victories. American ships also won victories on Lake Erie and Lake Champlain. It was these victories that made England agree to a peace treaty in 1814. The greatest American army victory, the Battle of New Orleans, was fought after the war had ended!3. Who won the War of 1812? No one. Neither side won new territory. The English did not even agree to stop their impressment of American sailors - a major reason the war had been fought! Impressment did end, however. England's defeat of France made it unnecessary for England to "steal" sailors for her vessels.4. The War of 1812 seemed not to have changed anything, but it did. It had some important results. The United States gained respect at home and in Europe. English influence in the Northwest Territory was ended. 5. Lastly, Americans began to show a new sense of patriotism and pride in their country. A new feeling ran through the land - a feeling that Americans were a united people, a nation. This feeling of nationalism was one of the most important results of the War of 1812.
