Gauge Pressure

The Pressure scale that does not take atmospheric pressure into account. At sea level, the gauge pressure will be 0 psig.

Absolute Pressure

The pressure scale that takes atmospheric pressure into account.

Non-Azeotropic Refrigerant

a synonym for zeotropic, which is the preferred term though less commonly used as a descriptor. Zeotropic refers to blends comprising multiple components of different volatilities that, when used in refrigeration cycles, change volumetric composition and

Zeotropic

In a zeotropic blend, the blends boil out at different temperature but at the same pressure. typical example is R704

RECOVER

RECOVER is to remove refrigerant in any condition from a system and store it in an external container.

RECYCLE

RECYCLE is to clean refrigerant for rouse by separating the oil from the refrigerant and removing moisture
from the refrigerant by passing it through one or more filter driers.

RECLAIM

RECLAIM is to process refrigerant to a level equal to new (virgin) product specifications as determined by
chemical analysis. RECLAIMED refrigerant must meet the standard set forth in ARI 700 before it can be resold.

System-dependent

System-dependent" and captures refrigerant with the assistance of components in the appliance from which refrigerant is being recovered. System dependent devices may only be used on appliances containing 15 lbs. of refrigerant or less.

Self-contained

Self-contained" and has its own means to draw the refrigerant out of the appliance.

ESTERS

The oils used in most R-134A refrigeration systems are ESTERS. Esters cannot be mixed with other oils.

Ternary

Ternary, which means they are a three-part blend. Ternary blends are used with a synthetic alkylbenzene lubricant.

hygroscopic

Hygroscopic oil has a high affinity for water. Most refrigerant oils are hygroscopic.

Temperature glide

Temperature glide refers to a refrigerant blend that has a range of boiling points or condensing
points throughout the evaporator and condenser respectively

azeotropic

An azeotropic mixture that acts like a single component refrigerant over its entire temperature / pressure range. An azeotrope does not have a temperature glide.

synthetic alkylbenzene lubricant

Alkylbenzene is a synthetic oil derived from alkylated benzene. It is similar in many ways to mineral oil and has some superior properties that make it particularly valuable in ultra-low temperature refrigeration and air-conditioning applications.

system-dependent (passive) recovery process for small appliances

A system-dependent (passive) recovery process for small appliances captures refrigerant into a non-pressurized container. These are special charcoal activated plastic "bag" containers. System-dependent equipment captures refrigerant with the assistance of

Polyolester (POE) oils stored in plastic containers will

POE oil can absorb moisture through the walls of traditional plastic containers. That's why manufacturers ship new POE oil in metal containers.
